RENO, Nev. – Peter Ciofrone's grand slam — the first by a Portland Beaver since June 1 — helped the visitors knock off the Reno Aces 8-7 in 10 innings Monday night at Aces Ballpark.
Mike Baxter drove in the winning run with a two-out double in the top of the 10th as Portland, which had never led, improved to 44-52.
The Bevos' Edwin Moreno (2-1) pitched a scoreless 10th to cap a three-inning stint in which he gave up three hits.
The teams will meet again at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Also for Portland, Val Pascucci had an RBI and scored two runs and Chad Huffman hit two doubles and drove in a run. His second two-bagger sent the tying run home in the ninth.
Ciofrone's slam came off starter Travis Blackley in the fourth inning. Blackley left after giving up five runs on four hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Brett Dowdy hit the last grand slam for Portland on June 1 versus Fresno.
The Aces fell to 48-48.
Catcher Michael Collins made his Beavers debut Monday, going 0 for 4.
In Tuesday's game, Portland is set to go with Brian Lawrence (4-1, 3.00) on the mound against Billy Buckner (4-2, 4.57).
