Madison tops Trojans 21-3

Defending PIL 5A champion Madison showed Friday that it will be a factor again this season.

The Senators, who lost 20 seniors and suited up only 19 players for the 2009 opener, beat 6A Wilson 21-3 Friday night at Wilson.

"We're a little young, but we're just as fast, strong and athletic," Madison coach Ken Duilio said.

The Senators spotted Wilson three points on a field goal of 20 yards by Zach Minor with 45 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

The Trojans were moving the ball reasonably well, especially on straight-ahead runs, in their first game under coach John Robinson and with his wing-T offense.

But the momentum turned late in the second quarter, when Madison track star Donavan McFadden — fourth in the 5A state 100-meter dash last season — picked up an errant pitchout and sprinted 87 yards for a go-ahead touchdown.

The Senators led 6-3 at the half and played better after that.

Madison's Jacob Duilio intercepted a pass at the Wilson 38 with 3:22 left in the third quarter — and ran for a TD on the next play.

The Senators converted for two points on a pass from QB Charles Reed-Dustin to wide receiver David Weaver.

With 9:34 remaining in the game, Madison got some insurance points on a 30-yard pass play from Reed-Dustin to wideout LJ Sly-Cain.
