BEAVERTON — Sean Acosta provided the big plays.
Taylor Altringer did a little bit of everything.
And together, with plenty of help from their teammates, they led the Tualatin High School football team to its first win of the season while also helping Timberwolf head coach Rob Hastin record his first-ever coaching victory.
Acosta, a Tualatin High School senior, scored two touchdowns of 90-plus yards and Altringer, a Tualatin junior, continued his thievery on defense as well as coming up with some key catches on offense as the Timberwolves scored a 40-22 win over Beaverton in a non-league game played Friday at Beaverton High School.
“This is real big,” said Altringer, who had two interceptions in the contest, giving him five picks for the season through three games. “The first win is always big. Now, it’s going to become a habit. This will get us rolling, and we’re going to keep it rolling.”
With the win, Tualatin moved to 1-2 on the season — and it also marks Hastin’s initial victory as a head coach.
“It does feel great,” said Rob Hastin, who took over the Timberwolf coaching duties this year from his father, Craig Hastin. “I’m really excited for the team. They’ve been working hard and they finally get to feel good about a win.”
Beaverton, which tried to rally from a 26-7 halftime deficit, saw its season record evened at 2-2 with the loss.
“We kind of started off bad,” said Beaverton senior receiver Stephen Nelson, who had three touchdown receptions in the contest. “I was happy that we tried to come back. We played better in the second half. I’m proud of our guys.”
Tualatin, which struggled with turnovers in its first two games of the season, didn’t have any turnovers in Friday’s game at Beaverton. Meanwhile, the Timberwolf defense came up with three interceptions and a pair of fumble recoveries in the win over the Beavers.
“Our goal tonight was to not have any turnovers on offense,” said Altringer, who was a freshman soccer standout at Tualatin before deciding to play football last year as a sophomore. “And we wanted to be on the plus side when it came to turnovers tonight.”
Altringer, playing at free safety on defense, came up with three turnovers on his own. In addition to the two interceptions, he also recovered a Beaverton turnover.
“I don’t know. I guess I just have a nose for the football,” said Altringer, who also had four pass receptions for 80 yards and a touchdown. “And we have good coaching.”
A Beaverton turnover helped set up Tualatin’s first touchdown of the contest. Timberwolf senior Tom Gilkey recovered a Beaver fumble on a punt return at the Beaverton 19-yard line early in the contest. Two plays later, Acosta scored on a 10-yard run to give Tualatin a 7-0 lead with 8 minutes and 41 seconds left in the first quarter.
Later in the opening quarter, Altringer pulled in an 18-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Matt Yarbrough to up the Timberwolf lead to 13-0.
