The Wildcats take out No. 4 Canby 21-14 behind Hayes Garrity's two rushing TDs

ROCK CREEK – It was only a non-league game, but Westview's 21-14 overtime win over Canby on Friday night was so much more than just that.

The No. 11 Wildcats (3-1) not only beat the talented Cougars at Westview High School, but they also proved their ability to play together, to come from behind and to play the kind of shutdown defense they'll need to compete in the always-tough Metro League.

"It’s really big. They came in ranked No. 4 and we knew they were going to be tough," said Westview senior lineman Timote Pongi, who led his team's defensive effort on Friday. "We knew they were going to bring it, but we pulled out the win."

"Our guys played tough and we got the win," said senior tailback Hayes Garrity, who led his team with 97 yards rushing and two touchdowns, including the game-winner in overtime. "That was a great feeling to know we won the game."

While Westview came away winners against the Cougars (4-1), the Pacific Conference favorites, it wasn't easy in any sense.

Canby shut out Westview in Friday's first half, limiting the Cats to four first downs and taking a 6-0 lead when Cougar quarterback Josh Yoder connected with Cody Smith on a 28-yard touchdown pass with 2 minutes, 45 seconds left in the first half.

Undeterred, the Wildcats took their first lead on the opening possession of the second half, driving 54 yards and scoring on a 16-yard Garrity run and a Matt Tyner extra point.
