Quick strikes land Centennial an easy win

Centennial came out swinging like a heavyweight champion Thursday night, ringing Barlow’s bell with its first punch and pummeling the Bruins for a 52-15 win.

The Eagles set the tone from the game’s opening play when linebacker Cecilio Silva rushed through the middle and slammed Barlow quarterback Campbell Summerfield into the turf for an 8-yard loss.

The big hits kept coming, but this time it was Centennial’s offense that was firing away.

Taking his first snap of the night, Centennial quarterback Nate Wolf faked a hand-off and calmly dropped back near his own goal line. He didn’t need long to spot speedster Kevin Bannister breaking down the sideline a couple steps behind the Barlow defense, and Wolf launched a perfect pass that hit his receiver in stride. Bannister made a quick juke move toward the sideline and pulled away for the 91-yard scoring strike.

“Our plan was to get off to a fast start,” Wolf said. “That set the tempo, and we just kept putting points on the board. Scoring early like that gave us a lot of confidence.”

Barlow tried to answer on its next possession, going for it on 4th-and-1 from midfield, but the Bruins were stopped cold as 270-pound lineman David Vieru met the ball-carrier at the line and dropped him short of the chains.

Centennial’s offense trotted back onto the field and three plays later, Wolf took off around the left side for a 42-yard touchdown run — one of his three scoring scampers on the night.

The Bruins showed signs of life late in the half when Miles Phillips spun out of a crowd and reached the end zone on a 12-yard run.

The ensuing kickoff pinned the Eagles inside the 20-yard line with 1:04 to play.
