TUALATIN — Tualatin kicked it with the running game.
McMinnville soared through the air.
But in the end, it was the Timberwolves' relentless ground attack that carried the day, with Tualatin's 301 rushing yards and three touchdowns paving the way for its 28-18 Thursday-night win at Tualatin High School in both teams' Pacific Conference opener.
The win marked Tualatin's third straight win and lifted its Pacific record to 1-0 (3-2 overall) while McMinnville fell to 0-1 (1-4 overall).
"We treated this as a way to get into the playoffs and it worked out well for us," said Tualatin senior receiver Christian Pierson, who ran for 90 yards and two TDs on nine carries. "I had a blast."
"It was great to get that win," added junior quarterback Matt Yarbrough, who threw for 137 yards and one touchdown and also ran for 111 yards and a game-clinching 47-yard TD with 2 minutes, 35 seconds left in the game. "We’re trying to get that league title. That’s our goal, to get back there again so every game counts."
The Wolves' defense did its part in the first half, limiting the Grizzlies to just five first downs and a 29-yard Wesley Bodkin field goal in the first half.
