Lincoln’s Claire DeVoe (242) and Madison’s Ally Shackelford (595) come out strong at the start of the PIL district cross-country meet Oct. 28 at Grant. DeVoe won the PIL 6A girls race, while Shackelford was first among PIL 5A girls.

The action heats up in all four fall sports this week.

The state cross-country meet is Saturday at Lane Community College in Eugene.

The state volleyball playoffs, which began Wednesday, move into their second round on Saturday.

Soccer state playoff matches are Saturday (first round) and Tuesday (second round).

And the football regular season comes to an end on Friday, with Grant playing at Lincoln at 7 p.m. for the PIL 6A championship.

CROSS COUNTRY

Central Catholic’s boys will seek their fifth state title in the past seven years, battling defending champion Jesuit and others in Class 6A. The Jesuit girls are expected to win their eighth consecutive crown. St. Mary’s Academy, runner-up the past two years, should finish high again.

In 5A, Cleveland’s boys are shooting for a top-four finish, after taking second a year ago.

From the PIL, district champions last week at Grant were Franklin boys (6A), Lincoln girls (6A) and Cleveland boys and girls (5A). Also qualifying teams for state: Lincoln’s boys, Franklin’s girls and Madison’s girls and boys.
