David Douglas had its playoff hopes at stake when it took the field Friday night without one of its top players, and the Scots responded with an inspired 42-14 win over Barlow.

Douglas took control of the game by making trips to the end zone on six straight possessions, piling up 28 points in the second quarter alone.

The onslaught started late in the first quarter just when it appeared Barlow may make a goal line stand. The Scots drove inside the 5-yard line only to have Barlow linemen Josh McCann and Mick Dougharity make stops in the backfield. But on third down, Douglas quarterback Tyler Maes sent a high ball toward the back of the end zone where 6-foot-3-inch tight end Owa Odighizuwa pulled it down for a touchdown.

The Scots were playing without senior halfback Dominic McCallister, who suffered a broken fibula last week against Gresham. That left junior Antwan Baker to carry the load Friday, and he did his part highlighted by an 80-yard touchdown run to start the second quarter. He came through the line, stiff-armed the first tackler to the ground and took off untouched down the sideline.

“Dom is a special player, but I felt good all year about what Antwan could do – I was never worried about him stepping into that spot,” Douglas coach Dan Wood said.

Douglas extended to a 28-7 lead late in the first half when Maes hit Rich Seamster in stride with a 42-yard touchdown strike with 1:41 on the clock.
