CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Second-ranked Virginia scored in the opening minute of the second half and ousted the Portland Pilots from the NCAA men's soccer playoffs Sunday afternoon at Klockner Stadium.
Portland (12-6-5) outshot the Cavaliers 16-12 in the third-round game.
Virginia (16-3-3) got six saves from goalie Diego Restrepo in extending its unbeaten streak to 13 games. Virginia hasn't allowed a goal in the last 10 games and has given up only seven this season. The Pilots took 10 shots in the second half, perhaps the best by senior Collen Warner in the 74th minute, when Restrepo made a diving save.
The Cavaliers will play host to ACC rival Maryland in Friday's quarterfinals.
“Virginia is a very good side, and I wish them all the best,” Portland coach Bill Irwin said. “We came in here and gave them all they can handle. We did our program proud, and I have nothing but admiration for our guys.”
The Pilots won playoff games at New Mexico and North Carolina State, both 2-1.
“We had to travel, which is fine,” Irwin said. “Because we’re going to give it everything we have no matter what.”
