About 40 family members and friends and “probably more” will watch Portland boxer Steve Forbes fight tonight at Chinook Winds Casino in Lincoln City. It’ll be Forbes’ first pro fight in Oregon.
“It’s really exciting,” says Forbes, who has returned to Portland after living and training in Las Vegas for years.
The card, which includes bouts for Portlanders Molly McConnell, Reggie Davis and Marcus Pernell, will be shown on Fox Sport Net’s Sunday Night Fights.
Forbes (23-3), the former International Boxing Federation junior lightweight champ, will face Arthur Cruz (20-14-2) of Denver in a 10-round junior welterweight bout. It’s a heavier weight class (140 pounds) for Forbes, 27, who wants to compete as a 135-pound lightweight. But he’s in shape, having trained for a fight in South Africa that was canceled.
Promoter Dan Goossen quickly lined up the Forbes-Cruz bout when the previously scheduled main event fell through. The last-minute arrangement doesn’t faze Forbes, who will make $15,000.
“Once you’ve been a pro and a champion, there’s nothing you haven’t seen,” he says.
