Concordia coach has big dreams

Concordia University added cross country and track and field to its NAIA lineup this year. The Cavaliers and Randy Dalzell, their new coach in both sports, are daring to think creatively.

“We’re trying to buy or rent a warehouse near Northeast 33rd Avenue and Columbia Boulevard,” Dalzell says, “where we could develop an indoor strength and track training arena, a world-class throwing (events) center and maybe a place to put a 200-meter indoor track and host some neat events. If we could get Nike or Adidas interested, we could do some neat things.”

Spectator parking on-site would be limited, but “we could shuttle people to and from the university,” Dalzell says.

A plan for the Timbers

Who will be representing the Portland Timbers at the United Soccer Leagues’ general meeting later this month? John Cunningham, president and general manager of the Portland Beavers, and maybe others.

Cunningham attended on behalf of the soccer club when USL officials met a few weeks ago in Seattle, before last week’s resignation of General Manager Jim Taylor and the firing of coach Bobby Howe.
