Ex-Timber Fagan wants GM-coach job

Bernie Fagan, a former star midfielder for the Portland Timbers, has put his hat in the ring to be the team’s new coach-general manager.

“I would love to take the helm,” he says.

Fagan, 56, is the men’s soccer coach at Warner Pacific College. A former pro player in England, he began his coaching career there in 1982. He also is president of the Oregon Soccer Academy in Portland.

The Timbers are looking for one person to replace both coach Bobby Howe, who was let go, and GM Jim Taylor, who resigned.

“I’ve thought a lot about this,” says Fagan, who has told Warner Pacific that he would relinquish his position if he came to the Timbers. “I know exactly the kind of player I want and how I would get that player. I’ve got a vision for the job.

“I’d want to guarantee the fans that they would get an extremely athletic, physically tough and mentally tough team that would never be outhustled. A faster, bigger team than last year’s. I would speak to a lot of college coaches, because they know kids inside and out, and set up combines in Seattle, Portland, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

“One of the big things is getting people in the seats. The Timbers need someone to promote, and I would use my name to go to business clubs and talk to them about getting them involved in some way.”
