The 54th annual Oregon Sports Awards will bestow a variety of honors for performances in 2005. Coaches, teams, prep distance runners and Special Olympics athletes are among those to be saluted Jan. 29 at the Tiger Woods Center at the Nike headquarters in Beaverton.
The show is set for 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. for complimentary beverages and hors d’oeuvres. Desserts and coffee will be served after the event. Tickets are $50 and are available by calling 503-721-7477.
Among the 13 categories: the Slats Gill sportsperson of the year award, the George Pasero team of the year award, the Nike-Steve Prefontaine award and the Lou Burge Special Olympics athlete of the year award.
Four college coaches and one high school coach are finalists for the Gill award, which goes to the outstanding coach, administrator or athletic organization. A statewide media panel has narrowed the field to University of Oregon football coach Mike Bellotti, Oregon State University baseball coach Pat Casey, Linfield College football coach Jay Locey, University of Portland women’s soccer coach Garrett Smith and Grant Union High baseball coach Art Thunell.
Five teams are up for the Pasero team award: Linfield football, OSU baseball, PSU men’s basketball, UP women’s soccer and UO football.
