Next: The Timbers have two tuneup matches before their league opener April 22 at Vancouver. On Wednesday, Portland will play Oregon State in Corvallis at 3 p.m. The Timbers will face the University of Portland at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex.

Middle man: New coach Chris Agnello has tapped one of his former stars with the Utah Blitzz, Alejandro Gutierrez, to play center midfield. The Timbers hope to have his work-permit paperwork finalized in the next two weeks. “He’s one of those guys you just can’t get the ball away from,” Agnello says. “He’ll be our playmaker.” Gutierrez, from Colombia, has been training in Salt Lake City. “He’s an older player, about 30, but he’s never out of shape,” Agnello says. Gutierrez led Utah to a 3-1 win over the Timbers in a 2001 U.S. Open Cup match at PGE Park. “He was the man of the match,” Agnello says.
