U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici is encouraging aspiring artists living in the counties that comprise the 1st Congressional District to submit their work to an annual contest.
The 2021 Congressional Art Competition is open to students in grades 9 through 12 who live or attend school in Yamhill, Clatsop, Washington, Columbia and parts of Multnomah counties. Local artists will judge the entries and the winning student artist's work will be displayed at the capitol building in Washington, D.C.
"The Congressional Art Competition is an exciting opportunity for young artists to express themselves and share their creativity and vision through artwork," the four-term Democratic Congresswoman said in a prepared release. "The passion and creativity of young Oregonians is always inspiring and I enjoy every one of the pieces students have submitted in past years. By encouraging the arts, we promote well-rounded education that will benefit young adults moving forward in whatever career they choose."
Students who enter the contest will be invited to a virtual reception with Bonamici at which time the winner will be announced and all of the submissions will be shown.
The deadline for submissions is April 30 and more information, including application forms, is available at bonamici.house.gov/services/art-competition. Submissions can be mailed to Bonamici's Beaverton office at 12725 S.W. Millikan Way, Suite 220, Beaverton, OR 97005. Staff will be on hand to accept the art outside the front entrance from 8 to 11 a.m. on April 28 and from 2 to 5 p.m. April 30.
